Point Roberts Honey Bees

At Point Roberts Honey Bees, the bees  always come first. We have been treatment free since we began and believe that we do not do Apis Meliffera any favours if we intervene to artificially support the bees with miticides and antibiotics. What we need are better bees and when we intervene to support weak bees we inevitably end up with weaker bees and stronger mites, bacteria and viruses.

Any responsible breeder (horses, cattle, sheep, dogs......) would never breed from a sick or weak animal, but; that is precisely what happens when a beekeeper intervenes to kill mites or treat a colony with antibiotics and not also kill that queen. Unless we also replace that queen, she is allowed to continue to spread her weak genes.

High levels of varroa mites??

“If you find a colony where the levels are very high, I’m advocating treating that colony to knock the mite levels down, but also requeening that or just killing it outright and starting over with better stock.” Dr. Thomas D. Seeley
